Shoreline change detection in the southwest region of Vietnam from 1999 to 2016 using GIS and remote sensing data

Abstract
The main purpose of the study is to assess changes of the shoreline on the coastal area of the Southwest region of Vietnam from 1999 to 2016. For this purpose, first, Landsat TM and OLI images were collected, processed, and used to derive shorelines for the above period using the Automated Water Extraction Index (AWEI) method. Then, these shorelines were overlaid for the assessment of the changes. In the study area, the AWEI threshold of 0.15 was the best for separating the water body and the land covers. The result showed that the rate of changes of the shorelines is significant different between regions in the study area. Therefore, based on these changes, we divided the shorelines into five sections: The first section has both advanced and retreated shorelines (about 2-10 m per year), however in the northern estuarine shoreline, the accretion is dominant. The second section near the Rach Gia city and the fourth shoreline section of the Ca Mau peninsula, the shoreline were advanced, in which the fourth section has the highest changes with a rate of around 75 m yearly. In thethird and fifth sections, the shorelines were almost retreated with the change rate up to 23 m per year.
